Certified Diamonds Atlanta | Certified Diamonds often prompt many questions. Our customers frequently have questions regarding certified diamonds vs uncertified diamonds and laboratory vs laboratory. Because of our credentials and direct experience in appraising diamonds, we provide clear answers in easy to understand "black and white" terms. Some shoppers have been given confusing or misleading information with regard to certified diamonds. For that reason, we are pleased to answer any question you may have about certified diamonds or diamond certificates.
In the end . . . it is our goal to provide you with the finest diamond in your price range, regardless of what that may be. We do not simply attempt to sell you a diamond . . . we teach, we coach as needed, and we provide the warmest environment for buying a certified diamond anywhere.
Specifically . . . the truth about diamond certificates as we believe it to be is as follows. The two most common certificates offered with diamonds in the United States are EGL (European Gem Lab) and GIA (Gemological Institute of America). As noted above, there are others, but these are the two most common. GIA certificates are typically the most accurate and most consistent with regard to all key grading factors. EGL is far less accurate and there seems to be little consistency between EGL labs. For example, in our experience "EGL USA" typically grades more accurately than "EGL International." It is as if EGL works from an entirely different grading scale than GIA in general and, then, even between its own labs. It is not unusual for us to receive an EGL graded diamond that, in our opinion, is off by as many as 4 or 5 grades in one factor or another. And, this discrepancy is not unexpected within either the jewelry industry or diamond trade.
When contacted by a potential diamond client, if they don't tell us that they want a certified diamond . . . we always ask, "Do you want a certified diamond?" If the answer is, yes, we then ask . . . "Which one" and ask if they understand the differences between certificates. If they don't already understand the differences, we explain them.
Certified Diamonds Atlanta | More to Know In almost every case, GIA certified diamonds will be more expensive than EGL certified diamonds of exactly the same grade. You should now be able to guess why. Very likely, because the diamond isn't the grade listed on the certificate. This becomes the old story of . . . you get what you pay for. So, does all this mean you shouldn't consider an EGL certified diamond? Answer . . . absolutely not. The fact that EGL certified diamonds are typically not what they are certified to be when measured against the GIA scale . . . doesn't mean that they can't be absolutely beautiful. And, many clients select an EGL certified diamond simply because it is almost always considerably less expensive than a GIA certified diamond of the same grade. That decision is yours to make, but you should be fully informed so you can make it intelligently.
We often show both GIA and EGL stones together so our clients can see differences for themselves. Some see a difference and are willing to spend the difference in cost. Others say they don't see enough difference to warrant paying the difference in price. Again, that decision is yours to make . . . not ours. Our job is to teach you enough to make the decision that makes the most sense for you . . . whatever that may be. We are a zero pressure environment. We don't attempt to sell anything to . . . anyone. We simply do our very best to provide you with exactly what you want . . . in your price range.
